Why Some Succeed And Others Don’t
Look around you, to your friends, family, community, and you’ll notice that some people are successful and some not so. Why is that? What do some people do that others don’t?
When I started my coaching career I thought clients would flock to have me as their coach. I waited and waited and no one came. Then I started marketing myself, created workshops, and reached out to organizations to discuss my services and how it might benefit them. Soon clients started coming. It was a lot of hard work and there were times when I considered quitting but then I reminded myself why I started coaching in the first place. That kept me going. Through this tough journey I learned what worked and what didn’t and also what I enjoyed so that I can narrow my focus. What I learned through this process also aligns with what research shows on what it takes to become successful and I’d like to share it with you.
Perseverance
Don’t give up no matter how hard it is or if you’re not seeing results right away. If you’re starting something new, it will be hard in the beginning and that’s an understatement. It will be very hard. The key is to not give up. Remind yourself why you started doing this in the first place. Continue learning, building connections, and more importantly continue moving forward. Learn from your experiences. What works and what doesn’t? The more you learn and incorporate what you’ve learned, the better off you’ll be. Remember, Rome wasn’t built in one day.
Discipline
Work hard. Put in your best work every single day. You’ll soon start to see that the work that you do will get better and will be noticed. It’s the same as working for someone. Hard work will eventually get noticed. This may mean that you’re not up-to-date with your favorite tv shows, social media, or even hanging out with friends. You need to make sure you dedicate enough time to your craft to the point of achieving mastery.
Self-Awareness
Self-awareness is the ability to see ourselves clearly, to understand who we are, how others see us and how we fit into the world. Knowing your strengths, talents, and passions contribute to your success by helping you make better decisions, gaining confidence, enhancing creativity, building better relationships, and being able to focus on areas that require improvements. Most importantly, it provides direction on where you need to grow and develop. You can improve your self-awareness by making time to reflect by writing in a journal. I recently asked people closest to me to list my top three characteristics and one area for improvement. This gave me insight on how others view me.
Success can be achieved with time through perseverance, self-discipline, and self-awareness. Be patient because it won’t happen overnight and remember that it’s the journey that will make you stronger and wiser.
